Lawrence and Greene County: Combines, Cones, and an Apple Weekend

Bedford and Linton do not share a square. They share the kind of September that is half harvest and half courthouse.

Lawrence County Sheriff Greg Day already put out the fall-road warning that every rural county should copy and most drivers will ignore. Combines, tractors, and grain carts will be on county roads and the state highways at 15 to 25 miles an hour. A car at 55 closes that gap in a few seconds. State Road 58 near Bedford is closed between Rocky Creek West and Shawswick Station Road over Leatherwood Creek for a bridge deck overlay through mid-November. Detour is 446 to U.S. 50 to 37. The Highway Department’s last two paving jobs of this round, Oak Hill East and Oak Hill West off Tunnelton Road, were scheduled for September 8.

The courthouse is louder than the roads. During budget hearings, talk of black mold and building conditions spread through Courthouse Plaza — “no money for black mold” is the phrase that stuck. Commissioners met this week on SIDC project bids, a VetraSpec software contract for the Veterans Affairs office, and a Magnus One wellness memorandum for sheriff’s staff. Council called a special meeting September 10 for an emergency hire in the treasurer’s office, then a budget run-through. Two county parcels are headed toward auction: the old Huron school site at 90 Hill Street, minimum bid $12,000, and 24 acres at 1499 Sunny Acres Drive next to Virgil I. Grissom Municipal Airport. The airport owns the airspace. Buyers get height limits with the dirt.

On the calendar: Fall Sunflower Market at Lambrecht Farm outside Bedford is September 11 and 12. Limestone Capital Half Marathon, 5K, and 1-mile is October 3 in Bedford. That is the same Saturday half the region will be at someone else’s festival.

Greene County’s next festival is the one people actually plan around. Bloomfield Apple Festival is October 2 through 4 at Town Park. Carnival, food, live music, parade, tractor pull. The Apple Festival 5K is Saturday, October 3. Between now and then, Linton is still living with an August EF-1 that cut through downtown, displaced about ten households, and left a repair list that outlasts the news cycle. Water-plant maintenance on September 8 carried a possible boil advisory. If your tap water notice is still on the fridge, that is the story, not the parade.

Greene County General Hospital’s fight with Anthem over roughly a million dollars in underpayments has not been solved by summer. Rural hospitals do not get a festival weekend. They get delayed reimbursements and a shortage of doctors. Commissioners have been moving EMS fleet updates, infrastructure grants, and economic-development items in the same meetings where nobody takes a selfie.

The pairing is the harvest corridor west of Bedford. Lawrence is counting road miles and building conditions. Greene is counting roofs and hospital checks. Both will pack a park in early October and then go back to sharing two-lane roads with equipment that cannot pull over. Slow down for the tractor. The apple dumpling will still be there.
